Seborrheic dermatitis: caring for a flaky scalp & facial skin
Seborrheic dermatitis is a recurring inflammatory condition affecting areas such as the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose and upper trunk. Flaking may occur with itch and colour changes.

Understanding seborrheic dermatitis
Dandruff is a milder scalp pattern. Other disorders, including psoriasis and fungal infection, can look similar, making examination useful when symptoms persist.
This guide expands on the seborrheic dermatitis topic listed on My Practice. It is a starting point for a conversation, rather than a diagnosis from a picture or a treatment prescription.
Assessment & care options
Medicated shampoos or topical antifungal treatment may be considered. Short courses of suitable anti-inflammatory care can be used for selected flares under guidance.
During a consultation with Dr Saira Mohsin in Lahore, explain what has changed, how long it has been present and what you have already tried. Bring the names or packaging of current skincare and medicines so the discussion can account for your existing routine.

Make your consultation useful
- Share the full story. Note when the concern began, changes over time and any previous diagnoses. Photographs can help show a flare that has settled.
- Discuss your priorities. Tell the clinician about discomfort, daily disruption, work, sleep or appearance concerns, and ask what is realistic for your situation.
- Leave with a clear plan. Ask about treatment instructions, possible side effects, the timing of a review and how to contact the clinic if something changes.
When to ask for medical advice
Seek review for severe inflammation, hair loss, treatment-resistant symptoms or uncertainty about the diagnosis. Avoid repeatedly using strong steroid creams on the face without supervision.
Questions before your visit
Can seborrheic dermatitis come back?
Yes. It commonly relapses, so a maintenance plan and clear instructions for flares may be more useful than expecting a single permanent cure.
