Scabies: itching, close contacts & coordinated treatment
Scabies is a contagious infestation caused by a tiny mite. It often produces intense itching and a rash; the distribution and history of close contact are important clues.

Understanding scabies
An examination may include looking for burrows. Household and other close contacts may need coordinated management even if symptoms have not yet appeared.
This guide expands on the scabies topic listed on My Practice. It is a starting point for a conversation, rather than a diagnosis from a picture or a treatment prescription.
Assessment & care options
A clinician selects an appropriate scabies treatment and explains how to use it, whether repeat treatment is required, and how to manage clothing and bedding.
During a consultation with Dr Saira Mohsin in Lahore, explain what has changed, how long it has been present and what you have already tried. Bring the names or packaging of current skincare and medicines so the discussion can account for your existing routine.

Make your consultation useful
- Share the full story. Note when the concern began, changes over time and any previous diagnoses. Photographs can help show a flare that has settled.
- Discuss your priorities. Tell the clinician about discomfort, daily disruption, work, sleep or appearance concerns, and ask what is realistic for your situation.
- Leave with a clear plan. Ask about treatment instructions, possible side effects, the timing of a review and how to contact the clinic if something changes.
When to ask for medical advice
Ask for advice if the diagnosis is uncertain, a child is affected, you are pregnant, or there is crusting or secondary infection. Itching can persist after successful treatment and needs review rather than repeated unsupervised applications.
Questions before your visit
Should close contacts be assessed too?
Yes. Discuss household members and other close contacts with your clinician so treatment and prevention can be coordinated.
